Crozier
It is only recently that I have learnt that these fern structures are called croziers - named after those elaborate staffs, presumably representing shepherd’s staffs, that bishops carry. Another name for them is apparently fiddleheads, which also makes sense.
The croziers on our fern are growing, and in time will unfurl to reveal new fern leaves.
J’s sister arrived today, staying for a couple of nights, so I had an opportunity for a trip out to Arley. The extra is another crozier, different in structure to that in our garden. This plant was growing beside a pond, I will have to make a note and see what structure it unfurls into.
