Gone To Seed
I saw recently in a newspaper article that we are being encouraged to leave our lawns unmown for the whole of May to encourage wild flowers and even weeds which will help to boost insect populations and other wildlife.
I'm already ahead of the game there as I haven't touched the lawn in our back garden since last year! Whilst I was enjoying not having to get the lawn mower out, and there has been an appearance of a few wild flowers in amongst the now rather perpendicularly extravagant grass, it's just beginning to look overgrown, unkempt and gone to seed rather than resembling a glorious wild flower meadow!
Today's shot is of the spread of flowers that have seeded themselves under the fir tree at the top of the garden. I hadn't paid them much attention but when you look at them closely, although initially rather unassuming, they are actually really delicate and beautiful. Being the opposite of green fingered I have no idea what they're actually called. Maybe a fellow gardening blipper can enlighten me!
I've also got another recommendation - an episode of the podcast Sideways called "My Last 5p" (you can find it on BBC Sounds). The journalist Matthew Syed explores how one act of generosity can have profound consequences which ripple outwards.
It tells the story of Toni Osborne who in December 2013 is struggling both emotionally and financially and is five pence short of keeping her electricity on over Christmas.
As she heads out into the night to ask her local shopkeeper for help, a homeless man appears and asks for some change. This is Jack Richardson, and when she bursts into tears, it prompts him to give Toni his last 5 pence. This simple act of giving alters both their lives in profound ways. I won't spoil the rest of the story but it's amazing and I thoroughly recommend you give it a listen.
