The first poppy
I noticed this first poppy was open yesterday. This plant came with us when we moved here nearly 40 years ago. It’s at the back by the boundary wall and getting a bit overwhelmed by shrubs in the rear corner of the garden. I took this this morning before the sun came round but I thought it looked nice against the underplanting of London Pride which also came with us when we moved but probably originally came from my mother.
We have another plant, don’t recall it’s origin, in the middle of the same rear bed against the wall but they are all still just in bud. I tried growing one of those lovely peachy pink ones many years ago but it didn’t survive. If I recall this one was growing round a rose at our previous house but we couldn’t kill it off!
We are going out for a late lunch (put on by cake and fizz to celebrate someone’s 80th birthday at church) and then on to Ilkley Cinema to see the 40th anniversary showing of Local Hero. Crazy really as we have it on DVD but why not.
We have stayed in Pennan on the Moray coast where it was supposedly filmed (it wasn’t) and it was very nice, we had a room overlooking the sea and the telephone box put in just for American tourists! An afternoon of indulgent nostalgia and Mark Knopfler’s music which is great.
