Places to Go

One of our current challenges is finding places to go which are accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter.

This afternoon we tried two places.

First, Fell Foot Park at the foot of Lake Windermere. It was amazingly busy, and having got part of the way down J was worrying that her scooter would not make it back up the hill and it was too busy by the lake shore. I walked the short distance to the lakeshore for the blip shot and then we returned up the hill to our blue badge parking place. Our visit was a short one. Before departing we chatted to a National Trust lady, who explained that the type of visitor (and the numbers of people) has completely changed as a result of the Covid pandemic. Lots of people bought kayaks and paddleboards during that period and they now come to the Lakes for the water, not the walking. The staff call the place Benidorm at busy times, and it did have the feel of a busy beach whilst we were there. The blip image looking north up the lake is completely misleading!

Second, the gardens at Holker Hall, which are delightful. We had some interesting conversations, I took quite a few photos. But the one in the extra was taken by J. The Great Holker Lime, which may have the widest girth of any tree I have come across, certainly in the UK. It was designated one of 50 “Great British Trees” by the Tree Council in 2006.
