A Day in Monterosso

Monterosso is the largest of the 5 “Cinque Terre” villages and the one with the longest beach, seen in the main photo from the other side of the promontory in yesterday’s blip. Our apartment is up the hill at the far end of the beach here, where the statue of “The Giant” - see extra - broods (over his detached foot, presumably).

We wandered all round the old town, stopping to share a plate of local cheeses for lunch, then climbed the hill above the promontory to the church and monastery where the statue of a monk looks down the coast to the other villages.

Higher still is the local cemetery where row upon row of former citizens lie in marble tombs, their photos surely bringing fond memories to loved ones as well as bearing testimony to changing fashions (see extra).

Tonight I ordered a traditional stew of the area of anchovies, sliced potatoes, tomatoes and onions. The bowl was so big I could have joined the anchovies swimming in it! I did my best to do it justice.
