July 22
I spotted this hawk sitting at the top of a tree not far from my deck. He sat there for several minutes, he must have been drying his wings.
Just before I went to bed last night there was an emergency alert on my phone, warning people to stay off the roads due to flooding. There was another thunderstorm around 4 am that lasted about an hour. In 24 hours we received over 100 mm of rain, one place records 180 mm. It's been quite the day. Lots of roads closed, some people had to be evacuated when there was danger of a dam breaching near Windsor, other people had to be rescued from their cars when they became submerged in water. There are still people missing, including 2 children. One of the malls here in the city flooded after a nearby river overflowed its banks. I stayed home today and watched the videos and photos of the flooding posted on Facebook. I think the video that received the most shares was one taken of a beaver swimming down the Bedford Hwy, which is normally one of the busiest roads in the city.
Now that the rain has stopped, it will take a few days for the flood waters to recede and then they can start assessing the damage. The main roads connecting the parts of the province will need to be repaired right away.
