INVOICE 001
I've visited the 1980s today while clearing out cupboards. I came across some very old accounts which will all be destroyed, but I'll hang on to this one, my very first invoice after becoming self-employed in 1984 (and I never looked back). The customer was my ex-employer who had made half the training team (two of us) redundant with no notice the previous month and then remembered that we were already committed to delivering training courses to new customers, so asked us to come back as freelancers to do the training - at freelance rates of course, plus VAT, so not very good planning on their part! I also went on to do lots of freelance work(?) for some of the companies whose staff I'd trained including a memorable stint in an advertising agency in London's Kingsway where I don't remember any actual work coming my way and most of the time was spent playing Trivial Pursuit in the boardroom where staff were given free access to the drinks cabinet and posh sandwiches were provided by caterers every day. Well, it was the 1980s and not surprisingly the company is no longer in existence.
I also came across some Charles & Di wedding souvenirs which along with other long-forgotten crockery will be off to the charity shop in the morning in an attempt to clear the decks before a couple of people turn up to view the house after lunch. Cross your fingers.
