Muizenberg

It was an early start this morning as we were picked up by Clive at 7.30am for a full day of driving around the coast to Cape Point. The drive is extremely scenic, going along Chapman’s Peak is a highlight and the boys were awestruck by the beauty of the majestic mountains meeting the blue sea. Unfortunately today the ‘Cape Doctor‘ decided to put in an appearance -  that is the brisk south easterly wind. It was the strongest wind I have ever experienced, and in some places I was literally blown off my feet! It was sunny with blue skies so a lovely day for seeing the beaches and the coast line but that wind was freezing cold!

We drove past the luxurious houses perched on the cliff face over the water in Clifton, past the silky white sand beaches of Camps Bay, the pretty bay of Llandudno then through Hout Bay, on to Kommetjie ending up at Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope, the latter being the most south westerly point in Africa, and the former being where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet (first extra). It was so windy that we struggled walking up to the viewing point and it was tricky trying to lean over the wall to get this image. There were many seals basking on the rocks and we also saw Eland and ostriches in the national park. From there we went on to Boulder Bay to see the African penguins, the 3rd smallest penguin species in the world. They were very cute but like all penguins have very smelly guano!(see last extra).

Then on to Kalk Bay, a working fishing village for lunch. The restaurant was right on the water's edge and we watched the Cape fur seals playing in the water below our window as we ate lunch. The seals hang about waiting for scraps from the fisherman and we saw two getting very aggressive with each other over their 'spaces' while waiting for the fishermen.

After lunch we drove to Muizenberg where we saw these brightly coloured beach huts. This is taken from the back of the cottages looking towards the sea. Adam was crazy enough to swim there, the sea was very cold and exceptionally rough due to the strong wind today. We walked up and down the beach and some had ice creams - Adam ordered a sandwich from a cafe for a young teenager who was begging and said he was hungry.

Finally it was back to the hotel after a very full day out. It has been a wonderful few days visiting the sights of Cape Town - we crammed a lot into a few days and it has been very busy but we have all loved Cape Town and wish we had more time here to explore more areas.

Tomorrow morning it is off to the airport for a flight to Hoedspruit, for the next stage of our holiday.
