THE TREMENDOUS TRIO GO ADVENTURING
Backblipped - just ran out of time yesterday
Well you've heard of The Famous Five, this is the OLD version of that, sadly not written by Enid Blyton!!!
Well we did have a lovely, too hot but adventurous day yesterday.
We set off at about 9.10 as it would take 1 hour 20 to get to Browsholme Hall. THANK HEAVEN FOR GOOGLE MAPS because it is literally in the middle of nowhere and we would never have found it without it!!!
Anyway we set off along the A590 and onto the M6 until Junction 34. then turned off to join the A683 towards Caton but turning off onto Quernmore (pronounced Kwormer), now on unclassified roads. I haven't been this way for many many years. It is so beautiful, right through farm country with beautiful rural scenes.
We arrived at Jubilee Tower, above Quernmore. Now I'd forgotten about this place, it was years since I've been here. Of course I had to climb the tower (see extras) and admire the far reaching views.
Now one side of the sign by the tower says Wyresdale and the other Quernmore.
Now the adventure really begins. We followed unclassified roads, wiggly woggly narrow roads, through stunning scenery to Dunsop Bridge. I have very fond memories of Dunsop Bridge, as one of the last photos of my Dad was taken here of him feeding the ducks by the bridge opposite the Puddle Ducks Tea Rooms. There are numerous places that claim to be located at the very centre of the United Kingdom but, according to the Ordnance Survey, the official centre of the Kingdom is in the parish of Dunsop Bridge just a short walk from the village centre.
Now Browsholme Hall is not far from here, but it is now even more wiggly woggly roads. So grateful to Goggle maps.
We arrived just as they were opening up. We had time for a coffee before we set off up to the house and for our guided tour. Which was informal, hilarious and interesting. This takes about an hour. Luckily I had booked a table for lunch when I booked the tour as the rooms is very small. Delightful but small. It is really on a selection of sandwiches and a couple of specials. Hubby and G opted for their Cottage Pie, I just had a sandwich with homemade appleslaw.
After this we walked around their delightful littleish lakes. It was so peaceful. it's not heaving with people, just enough to make it it interesting. Then around their lily pond where I enjoyed watching a dragonfly, but couldn't capture it as it was far too quick. It was now far too hot for me but pleasant in the shade. Thank heavens for air conditioning in the car.
All this walking, albeit stopping and starting, was too much for G so we decided to head for home.
This time we decided to go via Slaidburn and couple of pretty little villages and onto Settle then up the A65. We stopped off at The Country Harvest for drinks, arriving home about 5.00 pm - a long full day.
This is why sadly I've had to backblip, I was shattered when we got home - but it was such a lovely day. The Forest of Bowland is always so quiet. We did come across every kind of farm traffic on our journeys, including huge logs being transported but only once did we have to pull tight up to the walls.
A lovely lovely day with great views and good company.
