Flooded
Mindy sent me a screenshot of a recent news headline in Las Vegas. The house in the picture is our first home. It was built in the 1950s. We bought it in the early 2000s and completely renovated it over the course of a year. One day in late summer a storm hit causing a flash flood. The water had such force that Mindy (who was at home with our first child) couldn’t get the storm door open and had to climb out the window and wade with the baby to safety. Earlier that day she found out she was pregnant with our second child, whose name ended up being Noah.
When the water receded, everything was covered in mud. We didn’t have anyplace else to go so we removed all the wet drywall and insulation, cleaned, and replaced everything that was destroyed. Two months later it happened again. We were devastated but lesson learned. We cleaned it up one more time and put it up for sale.
The guy who bought it turned it into a car repair shop. Later it became a second hand clothing store, and today it looks like it is a meeting spot for AA. I can’t help but feel connected to the place and I’m sorry for whoever was flooded this time.
