...the name Bobby chose for me.  My Ma desisted.  She didn't like monosyllabic names and was reading a short story by Tolstoy, while heavily pregnant, with a main character called Mariette.

She pushed my Da a bit further by wanting to replace the last e with an a, which would have rounded up the syllables to  four and made my name more Italian than French.  He refused.  It was a shame.
