Teasels
Just a fortnight ago this neck of the Edinburgh woods said a heartfelt cheerio to the Festival Fringe and now we are welcoming the students back. George Square and its gardens have been cleared and are now home to those wanting to sit in leafy surroundings on their first weekend of the new term. Shame about the ruined grass and dusty conditions but the former will eventually grow back.
There was little sun today but it was still warm. Rain is forecast for later.
The coven of Merry Widows met for coffee this morning , the first time in three weeks. We had the added stimulation of having present, the son of one of the ladies. He had brought his son from France to attend Glasgow Uni and was on his way home today after seeing his son settled and stocking up on things like baked beans, marmite and everything else you can’t buy on the continent.
I watched a little of the Great North Run at lunch time but missed the elite runners finishing and saw only the masses. I did the run on my own in 2001 when HL had knee problems and I found it tough running along the motorways not really knowing where I was in relation to anything and also not having him goading me on. I think it took me about 35-40 minutes to even cross the start line, so many runners were there, even then.
I’ve had a walk round the policies later this afternoon and found lots of people out enjoying the good weather, but as I type, the sky is darkening and looking threatening. The first drops of rain are pattering onto the patio. It’s time to bite the bullet and watch the rugby match between Scotland and South Africa.
