SA Day Five

Started with a rather splendid breakfast (Extra), then walked out to the main road to be picked up and taken to the the tram terminus (about ten minutes away).

We were SO lucky to have had sunshine and not cold - two days ago there was snow on the hilltops! The town, surrounded as it is by rugged mountains, very much reminded us of the countryside around Queenstown, NZ. Though there is no lake…

We were taken on the bus to our first winery, Le Bri, and our guide, Roger, as we stood amongst the vines, told us how the area was first given to the Huguenots, and cultivated by them (after getting rid of the elephants!).

Five wines were sampled, before moving on to the next place - Rickety Bridge - this time by tram. We were met there by a tractor and trailer (too far to walk from the railway stop to the winery). We had lunch there, along with several more wine samples! The lunch was absolutely splendid. (Steak for us).

Next stop was Richard Branson’s Mont Rochelle, for tasting with chocolates. PHEW!

What a great day out. Made more fun by some convivial companions, especially a young English couple on honeymoon, heading towards Cape Town, and a semi-retired couple from Durban, who were able to give us a bit of an insight into life in South Africa.
