Ceci N'est Pas Un Chien
I've gone a bit surrealist for my image for today as this another tribute to one of my favourite artists, Rene Magritte (see previous blip 11/06/2023).
The Treachery Of Images is a 1929 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter. It is also known as This Is Not a Pipe (Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe in French). He painted it when he was 30 and it is currently on display at the Lost Angeles County Museum Of Art.
The painting shows an image of a pipe, below which Magritte has painted "Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe'.
When asked to comment on his painting his response was: "The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it's just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture "This is a pipe", I'd have been lying".
It has been suggested that it teaches us that the thing we want is not as unassuming as what we see, but its meaning is hidden behind what is in front of us. However, it is never easy to eliminate the obstruction because our eyes have no issues with the object, but instead, it is the the thoughts and language in our minds.
So when I saw this warning sign about dog fouling of course my mind instantly thought of Magritte (just how my rather odd brain works!) and how I could create my own version of This Is Not A Pipe - so here is This Is Not A Dog (Ceci N'est Pas Un Chien in French - hence the title).
I did have to alter the sign slightly and I added some effects via photoshop (not sure exactly how I did this and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do it again).
So this is not a dog, it's just my representation of one! :-)
