Saint Cuthbert's Cave
Our first day of hiking on this trip took us the 13 miles from Wooler to Belford via tracks and a few minor roads. Most of the route followed St Cuthbert's Way but for the final few miles we turned onto St Oswald's Way
The main blip shows St Cuthbert's Cave. It's said that the ancient monks of Lindisfarne laid St Cuthbert’s body to rest here in AD875 as they escaped from Danish invaders, although his remains eventually ended up in Durham Cathedral.
The extra shows what was a welcome view, as the village of Belford came into view towards the end of the hike. We're staying in an old coaching in which is quite quirky.
