Outside Llandaff Cathedral Cardiff
Please don't ask me as I have no idea, I can confirm they had not just got married in the Cathedral. What ever, they did look very happy so I suppose it doesn't matter.
Today was far better than yesterday, tonight's accommodation is world's apart from last nights. It is a real country pub, four miles down a single track road in a little village buried in a small Walsh valley. The food was excellent but excessive, very full belly.
Surprising finds of the day:- the oldest stained glass representation of a pope in England. The guide told us that as it was the tallest pane in a very large window the Tudors, who were removing all Roman Catholic symbols from English churches, simply could not reach it to destroy it. In the same window was a representation of a man playing golf. As this predates any record the Scots have it proves the English invented the game. The guide said he takes great joy in telling Scottish tourists this information. Gloucester also had an Italian Chapel Where the walls and ceiling were covered with painting and even the floor tiles where colourful.
Another find:- a triptych by Gabriel Daniel Rosetti just inside Cardiff Llandaff Cathedral. It was behind very strong bars as it is worth millions. We were told this church was the second most damaged during the last war, after Coventry. The man whose works are in Coventry, Jacob Epstein, also produced work for Cardiff, a huge sculpture in the middle of the nave suspended on four concrete legs.
I am beginning to think command of English is not sufficient to describe some of the treasures I am seeing. Please use Google who will do a better job than me.
