The Princess and the Dog

Visiting Memory Lane

Dear O'H dear, Lovely Tea Jenny and The Mini Princesses,

I popped round to see Fred and his wife, Betty today. Fred and I met on the hill, walking our dogs but he fell a few months ago and hasn’t been up there since.

Fred showed me lots of pictures of his family, dating back to his childhood in Galashiels. He was born in 1930 and I loved listening to him reminiscing about when milk was delivered by horse and cart and being a child in the Second World War with 2 older brothers who were serving in the armed forces. He met Betty when he was 19 (and she was 18). She was his first (and only) girlfriend. “There have been been a few arguments since then,” she quipped.

They moved to Edinburgh 60 years ago and have dogs most of that all the time. They never left them to go on holiday but when they lost Shadow, they decided to get passports and go abroad for the first time.

“But then we got Meg,” said Fred. “And the passports are still lying in a drawer in a brown envelope.”

And it was obvious from the way his eyes lit up when he spoke about Meg that she gave him more joy than anywhere he could have flown to.
