The crypt at Lancing College Chapel

Had a good day out today - set out before lunch intending to have a carvery, but it was so busy that we couldn't even get in the car park. Nearby (at Shoreham) is a shopping complex with M&S and Tesco's, and also a McDonald's. So we decided to eat at McD's (which was a bit of a novelty as we haven't been to one for about a year!) and then went and looked at crockery in M&S as we needed new dinner and side plates. Found some nice white ones as I'm fed up with decoration coming off of plates. After this, we went on to Lancing College to visit the chapel, which is free to visit and we even had a guided tour by a very nice ex-pupil who had left the school in 1963. It has a most interesting story to it, most of it being built in the 1800's, but the rose window and the section near the entrance being added on in the latter part of last century. When our guide was at the college that end was sealed off with a corragated iron "wall" - a real statement of intent to extend! They still want to add a more fancy entrance section. It's well worth visiting if you get the chance as the height of the place is amazing. My son got a good photo of the rose window and organ here We were taken down into the crypt by the guide and he left us there to have a longer look around. I like crypts, they're more intimate and feel more spiritual to me - no idea why!

We went on to the historic village of Steyning, where I took some photos, but wasn't pleased with any of them. It was very grey today and that didn't help. We went to a tea shop for tea and cake (I had warm rhubarb and raspberry cake with custard and the others had really rich chocolate slices), and by the time we left it was pouring with rain. We had a mostly rainy drive home, but it had stopped by the time we got back.
