The Little Door

It's surprising how much more one can see when passenger in a car that stops at lights. Surprising, indeed, that, despite passing through the area millions hundreds of times really quite often on our way to church, one has not noticed something so obvious before.

What is the purpose of this little door - clearly much smaller than its neighbours, who bear successive numbers. No, 40 is likely a tenement stair door and the 'wee door' a part of that property; none of the neighbouring properties have such a door. Quite likely it is an entrance to a coal bunker, where the coalman empties the sacks direct from the street - these are very common, especially to basement properties - to save entering the house itself, or a storage cupboard.

I shall have to watch to see if it is ever open when we pass again.
