St Columb Major

We visited the little local town of St Columb Major this morning. It used to be much more important than it is today and once thought that it might become the capital of Cornwall.  In the late 19th century a famous architect drew up plans to convert the large parish church (main and third extra) into the Cathedral of Cornwall.  But eventually the choice went to Truro. The church has a fun font (first extra) which the guide book describes as "rather poor 15th century design", and amazing carved wood pew ends which date from 1510 (second extra). The town is full of grand old buildings, now a little run down, but we had a lovely chat with an artist so famous we had heard of him who had just moved there and was happy to show us his studio.
