The Permanent Way Yard at Wittersham Road
Another day on the Kent and East Sussex Railway - another day at Wittersham Road Signal Box. My 15th learning turn in the box and getting near to my passing out turn in August.
I arrived at Wittersham in good time, allowing the opportunity to explore the Permanent Way yard adjacent to the station. This is the yard where all the equipment associated with the track, embankments and cuttings etc is stored. Some of it for a very long time.
There are endless subjects for blipping here, this one gives an impression of the sorts of stuff to be found in the yard. There are many bits of equipment languishing here being taken over by nature.
It was a bit of a different start to the day - the duty signalman had not arrived by the booking on time of 10.35, so I let myself into the box and phoned the controlling signalman who discovered the duty signalman was still at home, nearly 2 hours away having mixed up the weeks in his diary.
Lots of phone calls located someone who could step in for the duration and so we were able to get the trains running with minimum delay and giving me the experience of opening up the signalbox with a train in the station. All good stuff.
Another good day.
