Grey Heron

A lot of “chores” done today, but I took a break mid afternoon with the now regular circular walk to and from the Science Park pond. I took my camera with me on the off chance that the heron would turn up.

When I arrived at the pond there were quite a few people around, including children feeding the ducks. No chance of the heron I thought - and then it flew in, landing on the railings only a few metres from people, and seemingly unfazed. This individual has obviously decided that the chance of an easy meal is worth the risk of getting too close to humans. So that’s my first New Year’s resolution ticked off - to photograph our local heron :-)

The birds hunting technique here is to focus on passing pond fish and launch an attack from the railings into the water. A heron that wishes it was a gannet.
