End of the Big Sleep
Look who's up!
I've been checking on Peter tortoise (AKA Stormin' Norman) over the last couple of weeks. He has been hibernating in our garden shed for the past five months Peter goes into hibernation. He had changed his position in his bed of hay a few times recently, but still looked asleep. However, this morning, he was definitely awake, so we moved him in his house into his enclosure, and opened up the "drawbridge". Within about half an hour he was out on his veranda and then venturing out to inspect his garden. However, it was rather dull, cloudy, and only about 10C, so he soon returned to bed- before I could offer him a nice warm bath. He is looking a bit dusty!!
It's the earliest he has woken up from hibernation; last year it was 17th March, and before that, when he lived in the slightly cooler climate of Hertfordshire, he slept in until the end of March. I'm sure my Mum will be excited when I tell her her old friend has survived another winter.
