The view from a Keep.

We made an impromptu dash to one of the suppliers we use for the Lodge.  They are in Kirkby Stephen, on the way you pass Brough (Pronounced Bruff) Castle.

After we left the supplier we called in at the castle cafe for an ice Cream, you can't visit the castle and not have an ice cream!  The of course coffee.  Finally we had a walk round the castle.  Built on the site of the Roman fort of Verteris there have been castles there since the 11th Century but the remains today date back to the 12thcentury.

While in the Keep I took this shot through a gap in the wall.  I have noticed on a number of fortified buildings narrow gaps like this in the centre of walls.  They run from top to bottom.  I don't understand the cause.  The Keep had two opposing wall with slots like this, the other two walls were intact.
