Took the S Bahn South to Zehlendorf to find traces of the Stammbahn. It's the first railroad in Berlin. It opened in 1838 and went from Potsdam to Potsdamer Bahnhof in Berlin. After the war the route was cut in half by the wall. Also West Berliners boycotted the S Bahn in response to the Wall being built. The line is now derelict but there are plans to revive it. The land is still there and many of the bridges are also still there.
This bridge is where the Stammbahn crossed the motorway built around 1940. This part moved at the end of the 60ies and was abandoned because it was in the nomans-land of the border. The Nazis had big plans for the line and built an abutment large enough for some more tracks. It is now a canvas featuring some excellent graffiti art (see extra).
I really enjoyed my bike ride. The weather is lovely and everywhere is fresh green.
Many more pictures from today's outing on flickr.
