Canada Day
Happy 146th birthday to Canada! July 1st, 1867 the British North American Act united 3 colonies (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada), into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (Queen Victoria liked this name) it was renamed Canada Day in 1982. It's celebrated similar to our US 4th of July- parades, picnics, fireworks, especially in Ottawa -and also in many other places --just saw celebration photos with lots of red and white from Trafalgar Square in London! Pretty quiet here in the gulf Islands, B.C. on this very warm weekend. There aren't that many boats around....There will be fireworks on Saltspring Island tonight , but too late for us. :-) The flag is on the point on our beach, next to the US flag. I had to wait for even a slight breeze to fill it out. Also called "The Maple Leaf" it was just adopted in 1965 (with much controversy) to replace the Union Jack.(known as the Royal Union Flag in Canada.) Seems like sort of a "young" country. Newfoundland was the last to join after debating whether or not to be American. It's a wonderful country.
