White Camellias……So Special.
There is a camellia hedge along a frontage in a street not far from home. I love it and look out for its flowering season every year. Maisie and I walk past it on our walk. The hedge owners tell me it is a Japanese variety called “Camellia Setsugekka”. I am particularly fond of white camellias. They are a symbol of Women’s Suffrage here in New Zealand. We won the right to vote on 19th of September 1893. The all male Parliament wore camellias during the heated debate. Those members against Suffrage wore red camellias whilst the members who supported suffrage wore white camellias. . Thus those white camellias are special for New Zealand women.
