Blooming Trees
We treated ourselves to lunch at the Rick Stein restaurant in Winchester, and very good it was too.
As we had arrived in good time we had an opportunity for a little walk beforehand. The fine specimen of Davidia involucrata, (Pocket Handkerchief tree) in Abbey Gardens is looking at its best right now. In extras I have included a closer view of the distinctive inflorescences. Each purplish flowerhead is surrounded by a pair of large white bracts, which flutter like a pinched handkerchief, or dove, to attract pollinating . insects.
The second extra shows the City Mill, on the River Itchen, with its striking Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree ) now also in full bloom.
