Watery
Eleven or so hours on the road today to reach Masasi in southern Tanzania.
The rains in recent months have been intense along the coast. Luckily no new rain is falling but it’s been relentless thanks to El Niño.
On this journey bridges were washed out and we had to take meandering detours around fields and simple homesteads, guided by youths on motorbikes. Large swaths of the Rufiji delta have flooded and we saw displaced people’s camps. A military ambulance involved in the rescue effort had impaled itself on the front of a coach, seriously injuring the driver (of the ambulance; the bus looked to be unbreakable). This would have added another layer to an already complex social situation.
We were happy to roll into Masasi with the last of the setting sun.
