Why did Yankee Doodle 'stick a feather in his cap and called it macaroni'?

Due to (or is it 'owing to' - I can never remember) my vocal chords giving up, I have barely managed more than a squeak all day, and had to write notes to people at work. The girls initially thought it would stop me from being a shouty old bag, but apparently I even scribble irritably, so all was not lost....
