Mallard - It had to be

When I was a child with my Hornby 00 railway set Mallard was one of the available locomotives. I did not have Mallard, mine was a Castle Class Great Western locomotive, as well as a goods diesel a little later on.

Today we visited the National Railway Museum in York. It was very busy. The main attraction is they have brought together the remaining A4 locomotives from all over the world, including the USA and Canada. The area around these engines (of which Mallard was one) was packed. Getting a photograph without lots of people was an exercise in patience. One shared with others waiting for a people free picture. These days everybody has a camera!

Though this is not necessarily my favourite picture of the day I felt it had to be done in honour of this grand mechanical marvel of the past.

From railways we went to visit the Jorvic Viking Centre. A pleasant display but I was left feeling my expectations had not been fully realised. Finally a visit to the Minster and a walk around the historic centre of York before going for a pizza. A truly English way to round off the day!
