World's End

The civilised world ends at the line of the wall. Barbarians to the left (north) and civilisation to the right. In other words here ends the Romanized world of civilisation, baths, organised government and all the other things we would like to take for granted. The people to the left have seen it and want to take advantage also, but although they can trade with the people south of the border, their life and knowledge must remain something to be envied.

From the above you may be correct in assuming we have left York and ventured North as far as Hadrian's Wall. We visited both Vindolanda and here on the front line at Housesteads. Everything seemed calm today with no sign of the barbarians to the north.

Conscious the border region may be dangerous with the fall of the sun we headed over to the West and down to the Lake District where we feel we may be safe until the morning.
