A Gaggle of Gormleys
We took W's sister over to Houghton Hall this morning. We haven't visited before but every summer they have an exhibition by a particular sculptor across the grounds of the Estate and this year it is the turn of Antony Gormley. Gormley's style is to install life-sized human figures based on a model of himself, and there are 100 of them across the 300 acres of the park and gardens. They have all been installed so that their heads are at exactly the same height to create a single horizontal plane, level with a point on the lower floor of the Hall. In order to achieve this some have been buried in the ground whilst others have been installed on plinths, which overall gives a rather strange feeling especially when rounding a bend and finding just a head in the ground!
There are deer roaming in the park and also a rather wonderful walled garden which itself would almost be worth the entry price. And to round it all off, the cafe was quite good too! A cold day with a hint of rain; flaming June!
