Viviparous Sheeps Fescue..
..an interesting grass, a sub-species of Sheeps fescue festuca ovina var vivipara and bears live plants instead of producing seed with wind blown pollen. A common grass in the Highlands and in mountainous areas. The leaves are very fine, almost needle like to preserve moisture. The plantlets will continue to develop, and either break of and disperse in the strong winds, or become so heavy that the stem bends to the ground, where they can root. This one's growing at 50 m!
Other grasses are capable of becoming viviparous, especially towards the end of summer as daylength shortens, and the weather deteriorates. An all out final effort to reproduce in the year.
Lovely day today with temperatures in the high teens, but patches of haar came in off the sea a few times.
