Over the hill
It was mostly a day of routine tasks, but it was beautifully bright and I enjoyed a lovely, sunny walk over the hill. On the hilltop there is a large area of downland meadow which is not currently used for grazing, and just now the grassy path runs between huge drifts of wild flowers and long, varied grasses. In particular, there are lots of orchids in various shades of mauve, some with spotty leaves; I've not got round to looking them up, but they stood out among the huge drifts of buttercups and clover, the dog roses and areas of low growing brambles with their dark, red-purple toned leaves and light, creamy flowers. I also saw a number of unusual buttercups with some white petals, around yellow centres and with yellow flowers also growing on the same plants - the photos weren't very good, but one is my extra. (I'm too late posting this for Wildflower Week, but I'll tag it anyway.)
