Kinburn House with its octagonal turrets!
On our short cut into town this afternoon. The building is in Kinburn Park and is the St. Andrews Museum. It’s been a museum since 1991. Our boys used to love lunch in Cafe in the Park after a game of tennis at the adjacent club. The cafe has just changed hands again recently.
Kinburn House was designed by architect John Milne for Dr. David Buddo, a St. Andrews resident who retired from the Indian Medical Service. He named the Victorian era house after the 1855 Battle of Kinburn in the Crimean War. In 1872, Kinburn House became the home of the Provost. St. Andrews Town Council acquired the house in 1920 and used it for various functions over the decades including as the Hay Flemming Library and a telephone exchange during WWII.
The museum exhibition space is somewhat limited, there’s some semi permanent exhibits and storyboards re the history of the town, and periodic special exhibitions and topical displays.
There’s an exhibition on just now until late summer - “Flooring the World,” about the development of the linoleum industry in Fife, and its national and international importance. There have been other exhibitions in Fife on the topic. The linoleum industry in Fife is a case study in the 2024 Masters course in the Department of Management, at the University of St. Andrews.
That’s an Ukraine flag being flown incidentally.
