Taking the plunge

Checking through the many things in the campervan that we’ve not managed to use over the past 2 weeks (including chairs to sit out, bbq, shorts, many t-shirts …) the wetsuits rose to the top. So I braced myself and took to the sea for a dip. I make no excuses for the full neoprene - it’s was a necessity! Glad I did it but couldn’t persuade MrKT to join me.
On Hoy we went to look in at the new Scapa Flow museum in Lyness. This was the British naval base during the 2 world wars - hard to imagine now as it’s such a quiet and beautiful spot. The museum gave excellent accounts of the goings on to keep the naval base in operation as well as the many ships and battles. There were so many stories of sad losses. It was also fascinating to read more about the scuttling of the German fleet - on this very day in 1919.This included some accounts from local people who had been school children at the time and taken on a boat trip to see the German fleet. We were so pleased we’d popped in - great museum, very enthusiastic staff, and free entry - and a good cafe.
Finally we drove up and over the island to the west coast to Rackwick Bay. A fabulous spot and our stop for the night.
