Art in Bath
A bit cooler this morning with some mizzle in the air but Chris and I walked into Bath via the Kennet and Avon canal. It’s a very pleasant route and arriving at the point in the blip, which I liked because of the reflections and bridges, you can turn off the towpath straight into Sydney Gardens.
They were preparing for an open air event as we walked through and it was interesting to see the chalked out squares on the paved path for the food stalls with labels like: Disco Bites; Mac n Cheese etc!
We were heading for the Holburne Museum but not for its current exhibition which had been promoted around the town for a while, but for a coffee in the cafe. We did go in last year for an exhibition of early Hockney sketches but Mr Doodle, though quite clever, is perhaps not quite our cup of tea.
We continued through to the Victoria Art Gallery, across the Pulteney Bridge, to see their current exhibition ‘Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre’.
All original posters from the late 19th century Belle Epoque era, they were prolific because the development of the lithograph allowed inexpensive multiple prints. Paris was recovering from the Prussian war and civil uprisings and the colourful posters promoting both products and events brightened the place up. You can see some of the Lautrec posters in the extra with the two observers wearing hats. There was a selection of costume items to use should you wish to better immerse yourself in the experience!
There were many other artists represented and one of the most recognisable posters ‘Tournee du Chat Noir’ was by Steinlen who in his day was more famous than Lautrec.
After enjoying the exhibition, we headed up to Lucca to meet Grace for lunch. They are renowned for excellent salads and I really enjoyed my Coconut Chicken one. Chris and I walked back via London Road to Larkhall whist Grace went to pick Eda up from school on the bike. It was much warmer and sunnier this afternoon.
Eda apparently rode most of the way to school this mornng and all the way back to the village. We all had a cuppa and Eda had two Macarons as they are of course gluten free and we then tackled the hill back to Bailbrook whilst Grace and Eda went to get Jude on the bike.
A good and interesting day in Bath
