Flying Ant Day

Off she goes on her nuptial flight. She will meet a winged male and mate. He will die and this princess will chew off her wings and become queen of a new colony. I've added an image of a pair of winged ants to extras. It looks to me as though they're wishing each other luck. The worker ants are much smaller and it appears as if they're grooming the princesses before they take flight.

There isn't an actual flying ant day. Winged ants in a given area emerge in response to the time of year, temperature and humidity.
