We are sailing.
I wish I could sail but it was nice to see these boats going through the Lochs at Muirtown in Inverness going down the Caledonian canal. The journey runs 60 miles down to Fort William cutting through the Highlands.38 miles of the trip takes you across Loch Long,Loch Oich and Loch Ness and the rest is by canal.
The project was designed by Thomas Telford who used survey work carried out thirty years before. The scheme was a big one and ended up taking 17 years instead of the 7 projected. It was hoped to come in at £350,000 but it came to over £840,000 in the end.
The boat at the front of the picture is heading down to Fort William, having to tackle the 29 lochs on the way, and then going round the top of Scotland.
At Muirtown there are four lochs and a swing bridge. It was a lovely warm day and we walked along the canal to the Caley Marina. Plenty to photograph on the way including a family of swans and old and new boats, bits of rope and the canal itself.
Had an icecream at Merkinch admiring the view down the Beauly Firth and then a cuppa at Munro's garden centre.
