Old Bingley

We set out for a short walk today to the 5 Rise Locks on the Leeds Liverpool canal in Bingley. I had in mind today’s wide Wednesday theme of old and as the locks have celebrated 250 years this year it seemed very suitable.

We got to the crossing on the main road and the lights had  just changed so I knew we’d have a bit of a wait so I did a quick nip round the corner to the Old Main Street, the oldest part of Bingley, fur my blip. The street is still cobbled and the old coaching inn stands between Ireland Bridge over the River Aire the All Saints parish church. The blue plaque on the wall says it us a late 18th century Coaching Inn but on line it is suggested it was constructed in the mid 17th century and there is evidence if a hostelry on the site since 1379. Whichever is right it is indisputably old! We’ve have eaten there in its various guises many times over the years.

We walked along to the locks and enjoyed a coffee sitting outside the 5 Rise cafe and then had a leisurely stroll back stopping to watch two barges going up the locks. They are nit the longest or the mist numerous but they do mount the steepest incline.

It was enough as we are both feeling weary still after last week, the turmoil over the cat and Chris in particular after his second Shingles jab yesterday. I had the call to make my appointment when we were in Burnsall enjoying our birthday afternoon tea. It is for next Wednesday. I asked if Chris could have his too but was told he’d have to wait for his call. Yesterday he was having his annual check up and blood test and she said she may as well give him the jab whilst he was there!
A pleasant day, quite warm and muggy, part cloudy part sunny but dry.
