Rooted
A beech tree grips the sloping ground with its mossy paw.
Our damp summers ensure that moisture never deserts these hanging woods along the valley sides.
Even before July is out fungi are making the most of the perfect conditions.
In the extra I've collaged a trio of pore structures: on the right the spongey underside of a Boletus, one of that species which turns blue on the slightest touch, top left the soft spines beneath the cap of Hydnum repandum unsurprisingly known as the hedgehog mushroom, and below that the 'normal' papery gills of something I haven't identified yet.
Even without any summer to speak of it's always a thrill when the year turns towards the mycologist's favourite season.
