Pontcysyllte

Thankfully it’s been a much better day today - I think it was the couscous at lunch yesterday that did it. I stupidly forgot that it was wheat…..

Today we’re meeting friends for lunch in Llangollen - a half way point between us and their campsite. Lunch is in a restored corn mill by the river - delightful - and the gluten free fish and chips is delicious!

Llangollen is beautiful but very busy - it’s August after all - as is the area round the Pontcysyllte aqueduct.  After eating we head over to see this majestic triumph of Industrial Revolution engineering. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1805, it carries the canal 126 foot above the river on a cast iron trough.

Canal boats still use the aqueduct, and walking the railed path on one side of the crossing is a popular activity providing vertiginous views across the beautiful valley. The other side has no barrier but the sides of the iron trough, giving rise to vertigo in many!

My main is a view of the aqueduct from the valley below, with a collage extra of shots around the area.
