Photographing People
Today I went to Titanic Quarter in Belfast to photograph people. I took a total of 83 images, which mostly excluded people. However I approached and asked three groups of people to seek their permission to take their photograph. The first were two men in Harland and Wolff overalls. I asked them questions about how the ship yard was going and finally asked if I could take their photo; both politely declined.
The second group was a mother and two daughters who were visiting from Edinburgh and taking a few days in Belfast to see the sights. When I asked if I could take their photo they immediately regrouped and posed for me. This is not what I wanted them to do, but I took the photograph and they were happy.
I finally came across these Romanian workers who were working in a near by building site. They readily agreed to be photographed and did not play to the camera, so this is my choice from this morning's work. There is a certain ruggedness that comes across.
Coming home in the bus and thinking back on what I had taken I instinctively knew what the outcome would be when I did the editing. I also decided to keep it in colour.
