Lys Hansen visits...
In two weeks’, time I have to install an exhibition, but with all the recent problems I thought I would have to cancel.
However, M is progressing steadily. So, I asked my good friend Lys Hansen, artist, lecturer, and my mentor to come to my studio to go over my proposed work. I knew I would get a straight answer from her.
I was right. Within an hour she had the exhibition sorted. I reckon 80 per cent of what I showed her got chucked out.
It reminded me of a crit I received in my first year at Glasgow School of Art. There the tutor was even more ruthless. “Too much stuff. There is enough work here for an exhibition. I want to see one image only…and you develop it.”
I protested. He was adamant.
“Get rid” he said waving his arm around pointing to my twenty carefully placed pieces of work.
He was right of course.
