Chichester and Selsey
We visited Chichester today. The main photo is of the Chichester Cross, or Market Cross, which was built as a covered market place in 1501. The then Bishop is said to have paid the Mayor of Chichester £10 for the land on which it is built. It is a Grade 1 listed building. I believe the bust beneath the clockface is of Charles l, a late addition in the 1660s when the monarchy was restored. One of the extras is of the vivid John Piper tapestry at the High Altar in Chichester Cathedral. It was installed in 1968. After leaving Chichester, feeling the need for some sea air, we drove to Selsey. The tide was in and there was a very lively sea breeze. Unsurprisingly there was no-one in the sea, not even a Mermaid despite the sign denoting it as a Mermaid swimming area (see second extra)
