A Retrospective. Leitz Elmarit 90mm
Back on June 16, 2023, I published a Blip which referenced a treasured volume in my library: Frank Hubbard's seminal work, Three Centuries of Harpsichord Making.
This book was given to me in 1976 by my then piano teacher at the College of Music in Cape Town, South Africa. He knew of my avid interest in old keyboard instruments, and decided to present it - from his library -, one day during a lesson. As I perused the book again, I noticed that he had signed it - very conveniently - on the title page, and there was my Blip.
Back in 1976, it would have been impossible to predict that I would end up living in Boston, apprenticing for three years in Frank Hubbard's workshop, and pursuing a decades-long career making harpsichords following the principles which Frank laid out in his book. Tucked into the dust cover, I rediscovered a card written to me by his widow, Diane, who ran the workshop in Frank's memory for another 25 years after his untimely death in 1976.
The signature, the book, the card: details and objects serving as mile markers along this 48-year-long journey of life.
