A Last Minute Fairy Tale
I'd completely failed to get an image today until I literally tripped over this scene last thing at night. We've been having quite a clear out recently and this is some of the detritus that should have been disposed of earlier in the day but we'd got to the point where our initial enthusiasm and determination had evaporated.
'Inspired' by the sprite branded washing up bottle you can see in my shot of course the first thing that sprang to mind was the use of symbolism in fairly tales!
Fairy tales, folklore and mythology from all corners of the world hold various symbols - from fairies to birds, butterflies, witches, enchanted forests and speaking animals (o.k maybe not washing up bottles!) - and symbolism that play an important part in a story. Insight into the meanings of these symbols - with the use of such literary tools as metaphors, similes, archetypes, personification and irony - is intended to allow the reader to understand the tales on a deeper level.
While these symbols have been studied by many folklorists and scholars who have their own interpretations of their meanings, some are still unknown to a large extent. They vary from culture to culture and are based on the values, beliefs and customs of each particular culture dating back through history - I'm not entirely sure what my image says about mine!
One website I looked up about writing a fairy tale suggests "creating the magic behind the story". Somehow I don't think I've quite managed that for blip purposes and I'm not entirely sure that this scene would have provided the impetus for the likes of Hans Christian Andersen to embark on a writing career either! :-)
