NYMR 45th Anniversary Pullman Dining Experience
North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The day went as planned, it was a wonderful experience and all four of us agreed the facilities, the locations, the journey on the Pullman coach, the two steam engines that pulled us, the food served for lunch, the volunteers that run the NYMR and even the weather - was perfect.
We started at Grosmont, paused at Goathland for an engine change, then onto Pickering where we had an opportunity to stretch our legs whilst the engine moved along to the other end of the carriages and got ready for the return journey.
I’m not particularly knowledgeable about steam trains, or their preservation but we found out so many interesting facts along the way that I do now consider myself an enthusiastic and appreciative supporter of this nostalgic method of transport.
The image I posted yesterday was of 2392, an engine which is just over 100 years old. It did struggle a little on the return leg going up the hill but it’s not surprising. It appeared to be a smaller engine than the 44806 which started us off on the outward trip.
About 25 years ago I bought Callum a boiler plate experience on the NYMR and he stayed in Grosmont for a couple of days. He can’t remember the actual engine he travelled on at the time, but does remember a coal lorry from Fife unloading whilst at the maintenance shed, and being told the local stories of the volunteers, how they used to climb into the boiler to clean out the pipes etc. so much work goes on behind the scenes.
I’ve now processed my images from the day. A selection in extras if you are interested and I’ve swapped my main image to one of my favourites.
The last extra is of the scenery we encountered travelling across / through the North Yorkshire Moors and it almost made the cut as my main image. I’m really so pleased we did this trip as it was a perfect way to see the landscape that is now my ‘backyard’ and I can’t wait to get more familiar with it.
Our friends have travelled back south today (Sunday) but they came over for a hot supper of picky bits and drinks last night which included our neighbour from across the road for the last hour too.
