Day 3 - The Hunter continued

We had a lovely day full of contrasts in the Hunter. The weather was again perfect, with brilliant blue skies.

First a delicious Japanese lunch amid the vineyards. Then we drove through more vineyards to Wollombi. This area was opened up when the Great North Road came through, linking Sydney to the Hunter Valley and its rich pasturelands. The road was built between 1825 and 1836, by convicts. It is now world heritage listed as an outstanding example of infrastructure developed by colonists with access to convict labour! This part of the road was cut out of sheer sandstone cliffs and it bends and twists dramatically.

When we got home, we found a number of big kangaroos grazing in our backyard (extra).
